Hi guys and gals,
sorry I have been absent for ever. I don't think I have been this busy in all my life. I had a few crazy months trying to put together a fund raising event for Afghan Hands, working literally every day with one of my 3 great clients, Mandy Moore, Claire Danes and Rosario Dawson. They all had either a new album, movies and plays to promote. Between the make up jobs and the fund raising, as well as CNN airing of Afghan Hands in Anderson Cooper and CNN Heroes, I had absolutely no time off to even blog. WHAT BLESSING!!!!
I went to Uganda with Natalie Portman...
She is the spokeswoman for FINCA which provides micro loans for women to start their own businesses.
We visited a village outside Kampala in which a "grandmother" had taken a $50.00 loan and started first a brewery, then she bought one store and then another and rented them to convenient stores (Front Page Effeciency Joint and Snack) as well as putting a billiard table which can be rented at night by the local guys hourly when they want to hang out and play pool.
The sites in the village and the pandemic problem of orphaned kids from AIDS was heartbreaking. But this grandmother, who lost her own sons and daughters to AIDS, was raising her 7 grandkids and has adopted 2 other orphans. It was heartwarming to see some one extending a hand to help others even tho she didn't have much on her own.
I love the whole concept of FINCA and VIllage Banking. I hope to partner up with them in Afghanistan and have the women in my project work with them or even start my own bank with a little money as a deposit and keep recycling that money over the years. I have been reading about FINCA and Kiva to get inspired, involved and learn. It is wild to see how little money can make a huge difference.
I also met a couple of very sweet college boys that come in and teach literacy to the kids in their village. I have had the privilege of exchanging emails with them hoping to expand Afghan Hands project to Uganda and work with AIDS widows. The pictures are from my trip to Uganda.
