A couple of days ago, I received a very sad email from a dear supporter of Afghan Hands, Ammena jaan Kazem, who told our story in Zeba Magazine. I cannot come up with words to justify how sad I feel for the loss of the young life here. So I humbly paste her email here as a blog in honor of Homaira jaan's memory.
"Salaam Matin Jan,
I hope all is well on your end. I do hope that you remember me-I wrote your article in Zeba Magazine and we had a great 3 hour conversation about life!
Well, I am writing to you in reference to an idea that i would like to share with you. Last weekend, a very dear friend of mine was murdered here in VA.
She was only 25 yrs old and was found dead on 4th of July. It's been a crazy week and the afghan community is just in shock and devastated.
She was such an amazing person who touched so many lives in her own unique way. We are holding a memorial service for her on July 17th.
In honor of Homaira(may she RIP), I have decided to design thread bracelets (similar to the red hamsa) with a charm of H on there.
We will be selling the bracelets and all proceeds will go towards charity. Homaira loved fashion and charity-those were her two favorite things.
So, I wanted to donate all of the proceeds to Afghan Hands. She was a huge fan of shawls, pashminas, etc and was in the process of opening up her own
boutique. I wanted to share this to the public on the night of her memorial service. I know hundreds will purchase the bracelet and will be happy to support in any way possible.
I wanted to confirm with you that Afghan Hands will be a part of this rememberance and help us honor a dear member of our afghan community.
Hopefully we can even dedicate a shawl/pashmina in honor of Homaira. I was wondering if Afghan Hands had brochures, or pamphlets that i could distribute.
I want more peole to be exposed to Afghan Hands.
Please let me know your feedback and get back to me via email or telephone at your earliest convenience. I look forward to hearing from you.
I made a few suggestions with the future plans we have for 2009/2010 with fundraisings in LA and Houston and how much I want to dig deep water wells for clean drinking water in each neigborhood where we hold our schools and project as well as children playgrounds. Ihope we come up with some ideas to honor her memory the right way and to do right by her spirit. She may guide us as a guardian angel in these rough times back in Afghanistan.
