It was quite an experience to go back to my old hight school's theater to attend a screening if The Icy Sun. My friend Fereshta Kazemi is the central character of this amazing short that as far as I know, for the first time touches a forbidden subject of rape. The Q&A was amazing to be a witness to since everyone had such a different experience of the film. The most wonderful thing was that the subject or rape became a public topic of conversation and dialogues have started. She was joined by human rights lawyer Kim Motley who has been dealing successfully with rape cases and trying to bring some sort of justice to rape victims that were imprisoned for being RAPED :(. One of her famous case is "Gulnaz" who was raped by her brother in law and was put in Jain for over 12 months for a crime that was committed AGAINST her. Here, in Kabul, so many things are totally counter intuitive. Especially when it comes to law and women.
Fereshta had a new bobbed hair cut, super chic make up and a Zarif Design dress and coat that looked absolutely stunning!
Of course no good deed goes unpunished, someone took all her cash while she was giving interviews and worse, when she left the theater, her car service left her out on the street on a rainy day because she showed a foot of skin on her legs from her calf length dress and coat. We live in a society that every man makes it HIS business to pass judgment on every aspect of every woman's life decision. As we say life imitates art, it was the literal imitation here.
