One of the shows that I did for NY fashion week was Jolibe. the collection was strong, etherial and absolutely beautiful. I'm partial about it since the ladies in my project (Afghan Hands) did embroidery for 5 pieces in the collection. Make up was, alsomst no make up but glowey and bright... sans tan! The show was an exhibit at Hosfelt Gallery so I wanted the make up to look great even if someone was inches away from the girls...
here is how you can get the look:
Start with MAC's Strobe lotion all over the face and body
Use Neutrogena's Glow Sheer foundation lightly where needed
add NARS Shimmer stick in Copacabana to cheeks inner eye corner, eye lids and top of the nose or Neutrogena mineral sheer in Illuminator.
Use Beaute's dark stain on the cheeks and lips so it looks pinched
Powder only the very top of the forehead and sides of the nose with 3 Custom translucent powder or Make Up Forever High Def Powder.
3 Custom or Laura Mercier's Beige pencit inside the eyes.
Lipsticks has come a long way from super dry too brightly pigmented clownish make up to subtle sheer and beneficial treatment-oriented must haves in a savy woman’s purse. While only a decade ago one couldn’t find a lipstick that didn’t have a certain toxic dye or lead to render a woman a true fashion victim to now… infused with essential oils, lip softeners, humectants and most luxurious skin care item that is lick friendly.
I’m getting a bit over lip glosses and the reason is the little reality show starlette wannabes that overdo their make up and over use the gloss to a point that it looks like it will drip to their chin. It looks vulgar and cheap!!!
Sheer lipsticks on the other hand gives a beautiful healthy sine to the lips and it provides soft looking lips in pastels and beiges to bold fuschias and reds without looking clownish. Also those of you with long hair doesn’t have to worry of your hair getting stuck to your mouths. SO ladies…go shop Guerlain for their kiss kiss lipshines Favorite color: Strawberry shine, beige shine and lychee shine), Givenchy for their sheer shines (favorite color: beige shine and chocolate shine), Neutrogena for their lipsheers SPF15 (favorite color: # 45), and Laura Mercier for their lip kisses (favorite color: berry sorbet (I think)) or sheer lipsticks (favorite color: baby lips).
I just landed in Kabul, high altitude, dry air and dust... It made me think of all my favorite products that I could recommend to moisturize a thirsty skin. As I looked around, hard life and harsh climate has aged people so much that they easily look at least 15 years older than they should if they were in a place like Miami, provided that they use sunscreen. For best every day regime I have a few suggestions… you might want to choose what you like best by trying it at a counter of a store and then make the investment. Yes investment…skin care IS EXPENSIVE but if you find a product that is right for you, it will be worth EVERY PENY!!! As complete lines… I like the following: Orlane, Euoko, Yon-Ka, Lierac Individual products that I wouldn’t think twice in spending the money on: Hypnotherapy cream for face also for eyes, Antifatigue absolue serum for eyes, Pure jeuness oxygen cream, Morning recovery complex (I LIVE BY THIS PRODUCT) from Orlane, Christine Chin’s Retinol Smoothing Fluid (I can’t do with out this) and her solar guard, Yon-Ka Serum (another one that I love… add a couple of drops on your favorite cream and it is a SUPER CREAM) also Yon-ka lotion (it is an amazing toner), Dermalogica's daily microexfoliant, Neutrogena’s Body Oil and anti-oxidant face cream with SPF, Laura Mercier’s oil cleanser and softening lotion. Last but not least…MY FAVORITE OIL IN THE WORLD… Rodin’s Olio Lusso!!!! You won’t regret investing in any or all of the above. For special areas…like eyes and lips… La Mer’s lip balm and their eye cream (it has a little silver ball to massage the eye area), Lip Fusion’s XXL, Neutrogena’s lip soothers with SPF15, Lierac’s Diopti-cern, Diopti-poche for dark circles and puffiness in that order. say bye bye to old looking dry skin :-)
As I’m preparing to go to Amsterdam for a photo shoot tomorrow I realized how limited we are in what skin care we can take with us on board. The high altitude along with the fake recycled air takes a tole on the skin and will render it DRY and DEHYDRATED. Drinking water is even a hard task if you are stuck at coach and they only offer drinks 2-3 times during flight and the portions are small as well. What to do??? Some of favorite products for skin care products that are UNDER 3 Oz are Orlane’s Morning Recovery Complex, Orlane’s Antifatigue Masque, and Antifatigue eye serum. I also recently discovered Ollio Lusso, a luxurious light weight oil that is made by hand still by Linda Rodin and it tops all your favorite serums as well and keep the most dehydrated of skins nice and supple. Ollio Lusso can be used on the face as well as your cuticles and can be reapplied on your wrists as a fragrace in a pinch when the recycled air smells stale and or foule of somone near by have accidentally ... hummm.. broken wind and you are stuck in your chair,LOL.... don't tell me it has not happen to you. I had to pass around my oil to the entire row since NO ONE could breath... It was a life saver!!!!! That is ALL you need to make it nice and plump like a grape and not a raisin. All 4 fits in a one quart plastic bag with extra room for a few other things… like eye drops. My favorite, Visine A (for allergies). As for make up, it is so great to keep it chic and not complicated. Think tinted moisturizer and not a foundation, think a mascara concealer around the eyes and a sheer lipstick or two in bright colors and a fantastic lip balm. Keep it simple and enjoy sightseeing NOT the interior of your hotel’s bathroom!! Bon Voyage!
Foundation can be very tricky to pick. I used assist one of the best in make up when I moved to NY, watching her every move. She is Laura Mercier, known for making FLAWLESS SKIN. It took me almost a year after I started with her to “get” what she meant on how to chose a foundation color. She taught me to look at the entire skin exposed not just the face and the neck. Most women hold a tan on their chests and arms/legs. However, if they wear sun block (which they absolutely should) and make up (make up provides some physical block), they will remain lighter on their faces. Now to chose a foundation color is to check a dab on your jaw-line, on the décolleté and if the shoulders are bare. See if it “goes into” the skin. You want to find an acceptable compromise for your entire skin. Applying the foundation is also tricky. You might want to use a brush with gel or moisturizing, or a damp sponge with oil free foundations. Make sure to pick the right texture for your skin. Oil free doesn’t necessarily suits all skins. If you are dehydrated or have a lot of lines… oil free foundation can age you 10 years. When applying foundation, try to be in front of a window and do it in daylight. Otherwise make sure that you have a nice light on each sides of your mirror so you wouldn’t get the overhead shadow. Ceiling lights can make you look like you have bags and dark circles under your eyes and you might overload the make up around your eyes, where you should apply the least amount of product. Upon application, you want to check closely and see if you see pigments on the surface of the skin, if so, use the other side of your sponge and remove some of the texture. The goal is to “even out” the skin tone, NOT to cover. I know…I know… most of you wear the foundation to hide flaws but it is WRONG!!! PERIOD!!! Start with the “flat” areas of your face, work into your jaw-line and blend out. Do not forget the little triangle under your chin where the sun doesn’t shin, unless you are wearing a crisp white shirt and the collar may rub. Use the leftover on your sponge or brush to even out the skin on the “alive” parts of your face. By “alive” I mean the parts that move constantly and make expressions. These areas are “hotter” than the rest of the face and make up can melt and settle into lines around the eyes, naso-labial lines and lines on the forehead. The coverage is done by camouflage and set with translucent powder… but that is another story for another blog ;-) Let me know how this works for you!
Hi girls and boys, I have been trying to get my skin in shape before the summer damage and I have to say, it is so much fun to pamper and relax under the capable hands of some of the NYC best. My most favorite spas to just let go of my anxiety, my cares and wallet are Susan Sceminelli Day Spa at Bergdorf Goodman and Christine Chin Spa on Orchard St. Both surprise you about how different they are from their surrounding environment and both hit the spot as to make you feel like you are in heaven. Susan’s space I love when I need to check out of NY without going away. I first got introduced to her during a shoot for the spa. She gave me a gift certificate and I had the most insane massage/reflexology/facial combo that lasted 3 hours and I didn’t realized I was at Bergdorf or in NY until I was on the first floor again listening to midtown traffic. Her space is like a budhist monestary in the middle of of one of the poshest department stores in the world. It is welcoming and it, like her products smells like the T-zone peppermint oil brings you one step closer to rapture. Christine Chin has made a reputation on being the authority on microdermabrasion and skin resurfacing. She is a fanatic on cleaning brows and picking unsightly pimples. And does JUST that!!! I go to her once a month and she is the first one to get me to use sunblock every day and REAPPLY it. Now I have been into skin and sun care for over 20 years but I have never been deligent about it despite of my dark spots. She has been sanding them off for me since January and they are SO MUCH BETTER thanks to her. A month ago I was in California on a retreat and had a dream about sitting out without sunblock. In my dream I was thinking that Christine will kill me for going out without sunblock, LOL. She has a very nice sun cream but my most favorite of her product is the RentinA lotion which is gentle enough not to peel your skin but potent to firm and tighten the skin and to keep it clear from pimples, dead looking skin and clogged pores. SO beside those heavenly products, I suggest to boost your skin with Dermalogica’s daily microexfoliant powder, their resurfacing pads, Orlane’s Pure Youth Ampules to get the skin nice and ready for the season (used 1 week each season), Euoko’s cleansers, toners and eye serum R-50, Yon-Ka’s moisturizing Masque and Tan prolonger cream (amazing self tanning lotion with gold flex that looks warm but never streaky and orange), Neutrogena’s suncare with SPF 70, and their lip care with SPF 15. And ENJOY a beautiful, healthy SUMMER!!!!
A couple of weeks ago, I had the honor to be invited to my dear friend Lanita’s wedding. Lanita is a beautiful girl that hardly wears make up on her day to ay life. She asked me if I could do her make up for the wedding. Now I have done a lot of bridal seminars and bridal magazine covers in my days but to do an actual bride had me thinking a little more…. The following is what I though would be a good outline and/or guideline for bridal make up: One should always remember that on their BIGGEST day of their life, one should NOT look like somebody else. With that said, if you are a natural girl and your daily make up consists of tinted moisturizer, mascara and lip gloss… you should never go for a smoky eye or bright lips on your wedding because you don’t want to look at your pictures later and not recognize who you are even though you can pull it off. It is best to use a good masque (like a hydrating masque from Guerlain) to relax with and get your skin in a nice moisturized state (Do NOT do this if you are excessively oily). Then start off with a primer (like the one from Laura Mercier). This will make your skin wear make up the same all day so the make up will not separate on the oily areas of your face and does not disappear on the dry dehydrated parts. It is like gesso on a canvas… you want to prepare your face for paining and you want to make sure it goes on evenly and stay the same until you wash it off. I like an oil free make up on the wedding day, it seems to “stick” better to the skin but make sure to use it with a damp sponge if the foundation is a thick one (like Laura Mercier’s oil free foundation) or opt for a lighter texture (like Neutrogena sheer glow). Use to even out your skin tone but NOT to cover flaws. Use a light but covering concealer. My favorites are Neutrogena 3in1 and for heavy duty coverage, Laura Mercier’s secret camouflage. Use a small nylon brush to “erase” flawas. For eyes and lips, of couse chose products that lasts but do not pack on textures. Best to keep it sheer and glowey. I like Chanel’s liquid eye shadows, Mac fluid liners and cream shadows, Laura Mercier’s eye paints, Neutrogena’s Nourishing eye Duos, Laura Mercier eye shadows, Guerlain’s khole liners and tagine shadows and Diors 5 colour shadows. Also some individual “knot free” eye lashes can add a lot to the look without overtaking your face. And of course… WATERPROOF mascara! For sheer lips… I like Neutrogena’s lip sheer, Guerlains’s Kiss Kiss lip shine and their maximum shine slim lipsticks, Laura Mercier’s all lips sticks and lip glosses and for a killer RED I love MAC’s Ruby Woo. I prefer soft pinks and corals, lighter colors that complement your theme and flower colors. Happy wedding!!! Matin
I have been using primers for over 18 years in make up. My first primer was a Sheseido product called “Pre Make Up Cream”. It was a soft pinkish cream that gave skin a very nice texture and claimed to hold onto make up better. I kept experimenting with it with my clients at the department store and the ones that bought it, stayed very loyal to it. It is hard to tell the immediate “change” in application but once you use a primer, you will notice that your make up wears better and the same all over your face. Oily skin or T-zone tends to separate make up and dry skin tends to absorb make up. Or make up appears to vanish on it. Primer simply creates a uniform surface for the make up to go on evenly and stay on and wear the same all over the face. There are many primers in the market. I tend to use Laura Mercier’s the most. However, for a rosier complexion, I like Benefits, for a demi-matt, I like Vincent longo’s water canvas and for a more matt finish, I love the La Prairie primer called rose cream.
Where to begin and where to end?? It has always been a dilemma for many women. Best is to take off absolutely minimum amount. Like taking off the center of the brows in case one has connecting brows, although I have seen cases that the girl looks absolutely divine, like a mogul miniature portrait. Or maybe tweeze a little along the edge of the brow. Did you know that brows and lips naturally thin out with age. So please do NOT over pluck. My favorite shape is when the brown starts aligned with the inner corner of the eye, gets the highest arch ¾ towards the lateral edge of the brow and thins out gradually to the outside edge until the corner of the eye meets the end of the brow if you put a pencil and hold it like a ruler from the outer corner of the nostril, to the outer corner of the eye and wherever it meets or should meet the eyebrow, that is where the brow should end.
